AIMSupt. Monthly

May 2021 | Issue 13

Greetings,

As we near the end of another school year like no other, we are filled with gratitude for our AIMS students, families, staff, and our entire community. The past year has challenged each and every one of us in so many ways, but I am hopeful that we can only go up from here.

It’s been a busy month for us at AIMS, and we still have a lot more in store. As we prepare to send off our AIMS Class of 2021 next month, the season of celebrations has officially begun. Stay tuned for more!

Announcing our Class of 2021 AIMS HS Valedictorian

It is with great enthusiasm that we officially announce our AIMS HS Valedictorian for the Class of 2021, Parneet Virk! Parneet earned this special honor by maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career and has been accepted to UCLA.

We are also pleased to announce that longtime KTVU 2 News Anchor Claudine Wong will serve as this year’s special guest speaker. Our AIMS High School Graduation ceremony is set to take place on Thursday, June 17th. We cannot wait to celebrate the AIMS HS Class of 2021.

AIMS x All Tied Up Basketball Tournament

In honor of the 5th Anniversary of All Tied Up and their founder, Armand Carr’s, birthday we got together to hold the first annual AIMS- All Tied Up celebratory basketball tournament. AIMS and All Tied Up surprised Armand with a special AIMS plaque to honor the occasion and to thank him for everything he does for our students. AIMS students hooped with the best, and came close to winning the championship.

We heard some special words from the former Golden State Warrior, Adonal Foyle. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s office also presented a special proclamation to officially name May 16, 2021, Armand Carr day. We had an incredible time. You can watch a recap of the celebration here.

AIMS is a Consecutive A-G Quality School Awards Winner

AIMS had the honor of being recognized for the second year in a row at the A-G Quality School Awards. We are proud to receive this recognition for our outstanding A-G completion rates for Latinx students and a 100% A-G Achievement for our African American students.

It is always our goal to ensure AIMS students graduate college ready and eligible to attend any 4-year school of their choice. A special thank you to Families in Action for Quality Education and Energy Convertors for holding this joyous community celebration honoring the achievements of Oakland public schools in A-G completion.

AIMS Oakland Promise Scholars

We are immensely proud of our 26 AIMS High School students who were chosen as Oakland Promise scholarship recipients. These students have put in the hard work during their time at AIMS and we are so excited to see them start their journey towards a higher education with support from organizations like Oakland Promise.

AIMS Staff Appreciation Week

To show our thanks and deepest appreciation for our AIMS teachers and staff, we held a special staff appreciation week full of churro trucks, bagels and coffee, and raffle prizes. It is one small way to honor our staff that has gone above and beyond to ensure that their students remain inspired and supported while navigating the challenges of the past year.

From having to transition from virtual learning back to in-person instruction under new guidelines, all while juggling their own families, none of it has been easy. We are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such innovative and passionate people who are building the next generation of leaders and game changers. You can view my message in honor of staff appreciation week here.

AIMS is Hiring! Join us for our Upcoming Virtual Job Fairs

Save the date! On June 11th and July 9th we will be holding a virtual job fair where candidates have the opportunity for same-day interviews with our heads of schools. We are seeking K-12 teachers for AP classes, ELA & History, Math & Science, Foreign languages, Music, PE, Coaches, ELD, SpEd, and more! Please share with your networks.

AIMS HS Golden Eagles Soccer Team is Championship Bound

The AIMS HS Golden Eagles Soccer team is advancing to the BACSAC Varsity Men's Soccer Championship after their win against Oakland Unity. AIMS freshman Julio Martinez-Galvan was the player of the game with two goals and Sophomore Diego Garcia scored another two goals, extending his impressive streak of 8 goals over a three-game period.

The Golden Eagles are seeking their first ever soccer Championship and AIMS HS's third championship this school year. Best of luck to our Golden Eagles in the championship!

Unity Against Hate

As an AIMS community, we attended the Unity Against Hate Rally held in Oakland’s Chinatown. I had the honor of sharing a few words and introducing our student government president Annie Chiu.

Annie spoke about her experiences growing up in Chinatown and how disheartening it is to see the attacks on her home and community. Annie encouraged us to overcome the divide by working together as a community to unite against hate. We are incredibly proud of Annie’s continued leadership as she speaks her personal truth to fight against hate.

We look forward to sharing all of the great celebrations we have in store for the AIMS Class of 2021. Thank you for still being here with us.

We are stronger together and together we remain AIMSTRONG!

Respectfully,
