AIMS HS PROMOTION AND RETENTION POLICY

AIMS HS Matriculation and Promotion Criteria: Effective during the 2017- 2018 Academic School Year, AIMS HS no longer retains students based upon receiving a “C-” or below grade in Math or English subjects. AIMS HS now operates under a credit-based model in which all students are required to obtain a number of credits in order to determine their official grade-level classification. At AIMS HS, any “C-” or below semester grade in any subject is considered failing and will result in zero credits earned for that course. Students are required to retake all required failed classes or their equivalent during summer credit recovery, or at a community college. Students without the designated credit requirements will not matriculate to their next level and will be designated as “hybrid” status until they have met all prerequisite credit requirements.

AIMS A-G+ Graduation Requirements: All AIMS HS students must complete our A-G+ requirements, in which they take additional years of A-G classes. These additional requirements serve to make all AIMS HS students better prepared for the rigors of college, provides a greater opportunity to additional AP-level courses, and makes the student appear more favorable during the college application process.

4-Year Core Course Requirement: Well documented research suggests that students can lose up to two to three months of math and English-related skills as a result of non-academic activity over summer break. These losses are greatly increased whenever students do not take any of these corresponding courses over the course of a year. For these reasons, all AIMS HS students will be required to take Math, English, Science, History, and their Core Elective classes at each grade level. With the exception of Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus, students will not be granted permission to take community college courses in Math, English, Science, or History subjects for the purposes of graduating early or avoiding the 4-year core course requirement. Extenuating circumstances to waive the 4-year core course requirement may only be approved by the Head of School.

Graduation Requirements for Students with IEP, 504 Plan, ILP: Students with an IEP, 504 Plan, or ILP will graduate from high school based on the individual’s progress according to their plan. Ongoing progress will be monitored by teachers and the Special Education Coordinator, as well as during their annual review.
